Achieving the '10 Healthy Habits' - Nick Stanhope

Q: WHAT DO THE 10 HEALTHY HABITS MEAN TO YOU?

Healthy Habits are the foundation of wellbeing upon which we can build our health, energy and happiness. They are simple, every day steps that each of us can take to nurture our wellbeing.

Q: WHAT DRIVES YOU TO LIVE AND BREATHE OUR HEALTHY HABITS?

I perform at my best when I get the right food, exercise and quality sleep into my day. We are all busy being busy, but it’s important to make time for the things that are important to us and help us feel nourished both physically and mentally. I also think it is important to read and do continued research into the latest developments for a healthy lifestyle.

Q: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THOSE HEALTHY HABITS WHEN YOU'RE TRAVELLING?

Travel is tiring so I do what I can to minimize unnecessary stress on myself when I’m heading overseas by getting as much sleep as I can, finding healthy options to eat and not over committing myself before and after the trip. We are so lucky to live in a world where we can connect with our loved ones via Facebook, Skype etc and I make sure that I connect in with my wife and daughters every day when I am away. I also take advantage of gyms at hotels and airports, explore new places by foot wherever I can – including airports – and appreciate the downtime I get on a flight. It’s a good chance to practice meditation or catch up on the latest movies.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE STRUGGLING FOR MOTIVATION OR HAVE ZERO TIME?

No two days are the same, so I adapt my schedule daily to ensure that I include exercise to recharge my batteries and have time to connect with colleagues. I also do a lot of reading and emails in the evening after spending time with my family. It is great to have the tools that enable me to work flexibly like that.

Q: HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THE HEALTHY HABITS INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

I make the most of the summer holidays. There is nothing better than having more daylight and good weather to enjoy the great outdoors. I take full advantage of the longer days to enjoy swimming, golf and water sports. I spend a lot of time travelling overseas throughout the year, so for me there is nothing better than a staycation with my family.

Q: WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT?

We have recently joined the global AIA family and I am excited about the opportunities ahead for us as part of the world’s largest life insurance provider. Learning from my colleagues across the globe and setting course on a mission to make New Zealand one of the healthiest nations in the world gives me incredible drive.

Q: WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND HOW DO YOU PRACTICE THE HEALTHY HABITS?

My ideal day would include getting up early and having a head start on the day; lots of water; taking some time to walk around the office to chat with everyone; a gym session; quality time with my family, especially connecting with my daughters after school to hear about their day; and some quiet time for meditation.

Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OUR READERS?

Don’t compare yourself to others. We are all different and enjoy different things – find what works for you and enjoy your life.
